JF Monday Message - 10.12

Hello and Happy Monday, Jameson Fellows!
“Compassion is not a virtue — it is a commitment.” — Brené Brown

Thank you to Shaka and The Mob Museum for a very inspiring discussion! It was wonderful to see such a great turnout of fellows and prospective fellows. Shaka’s story is extraordinary, and his reflections on hope, compassion, and the power of human connection were truly inspiring.
He spoke about the “sparks of light” that helped him navigate one of the darkest chapters of his life, and how those small moments of hope eventually allowed him to see the light in its entirety. Such a beautiful reminder of the power we all have to be that light for someone else.
A few other powerful reflections from the evening:
✨ “Don’t let a 30-second decision become a lifetime consequence.”
✨ His realization that the prison he had built in his own mind existed long before he was ever physically incarcerated.
And perhaps most moving of all, how those sparks of light made him feel like the luckiest person in the unluckiest of places. 🫶🏼
What a remarkable and inspiring conversation about resilience, second chances, and the extraordinary impact of human kindness.

Our Executive Director, Krista, and her husband spent a day in Kibera, walking through the area known as Chocolate City and visiting Agape Hope for Kibera and the Agape School of Hope.
"The experience reminded me that compassion does more than witness suffering. It calls us to walk alongside one another, because when we lift others, we rise together." ❤️
